The people now known as Delta Ibos are supposed to be Ibos
living in the western part of the country with language, cultural and historical
affinities with those of the Eastern Ibos yet these Eastern Ibos have allowed
themselves to fall like a pack of cards in the face of politics. We have since
realized that the Ibos do not know how to play politics, politics therefore
remains the farthest glory any Eastern Ibo will ever hope to achieve.
It is therefore not surprising to most of us who are today known as Anioma
people that the Eastern Ibos would abandon us. Using very unusual names and
terminologies such as Delta Ibos, south-south Ibos, Bendel Ibos, Aniomas and so
on. So we ask the Ibos how politics is played. What is happening to the Ibos
today in Nigeria’s political theatre finds expression in the saying of one
great philosopher which states that “when good people refuse to rule evil men
will rule over them”
Was it not the Sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo who during the tussle on whether
Lagos should be administrated separately or not stated that in the creation of
states, tribal, historical as well as linguistic affinity remains the major
instrument in actualizing this yet several years afterwards the Ibos have not
learnt a lesson.
Anyone who has cared to identify with history will understand the origin of
Delta Ibo as that which can be traced to their Eastern Neighbors, the Ibos.
It is very unnecessary to point out here that we share similarities in names,
names of places, cultures; traditions etc yet the Eastern Ibos have come to deny
us on the matter of state creation. Anyone who is current on the Biafran war
knows too well that the figure of indigenes of Asaba, Ogwashi-Uku and Ibusa who
died as result of massacre carried out by the Federal troop during the war far
surpasses those of any single Eastern Ibo town. Today, the same Delta Ibos are
not worthy of support by their Eastern Ibo counterparts on state creation.
It is particularly sad to listen to the so called Ibo big-wigs such as Chief
Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu and Chief Arthur Nzeribe in one of their committees set up
to adopt any one state following the Constitutional Amendment Committee and the
Political Reform Conference recommendation that a sixth State be created for the
Southeast geo-political zone, to equate the number of States within the six
geo-political zones in Nigeria argue that the emergence of ANIOMA state would
mean an additional state for the south-south geo-political region. For this
reason they began to recommend the creation of states like
The majority of the Ibo politicians need to be tutored in art of politics as
they failed to realized that the creation of South-south geo political zone
meant a decrease in the size and political stature of the once giant
South-Eastern region every Ibo man particularly the much agitated but now
defunct Biafra state was proud of. The loss of Delta Ibo has now become a gain
for the South-south.
This is certainly not the idea of politics especially as we consider now that
all of the euphoria leading to the agitation of the enlargement of even the
south-East region have greatly died down and cannot be re-awakened by our Ibo
brothers in this present dispensation. Eastern Ibo politicians are truly
disappointing us.
